Capturing a Headshot and Voice for Your Avatar

This guide provides instructions on capturing the essential headshot and voice recordings needed for your avatar.

Steps

1. Download a 3D scanner app

We've shortlisted apps that enable you to take a one-time scan at no cost.

Android:

KIRI Engine

iOS:

3D Scan Pro

2. Take a scan

  1. Find a volunteer.
  2. Don't worry about your haircut or skin imperfections, they won't be considered.
  3. Lighting conditions are critical. Make sure you take the scan outdoors with enough ambient light, but avoid direct sunshine to prevent shadows. A cloudy day is perfect.
  4. Sit on a chair. If you have glasses or large earrings, take them off.
  5. Instruct your buddy to scan your head like this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sToLFOngMiM.
Three rounds: straight on, from above, from below.
Only a headshot, not the body or bust.
Maintain a neutral expression during the scan. Avoid smiling, closing your eyes, or sticking out your tongue. :)
Make sure to set the app to Photo mode. (For higher quality, avoid using LiDAR.)
Automatic mode will capture your face with some overlap. No manual capture is needed.

3. Process and export the scan

While normal quality is fine for testing, we recommend setting high resolution quality for the final model export.

Select *.obj file type for your export, including textures.

4. Record your voice

Use any voice recording app you prefer, or a video meeting platform (Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom).

For each of your preferred languages:

  • Record 1-2 minutes of your speech.
  • Save the recording in any common file format and standard quality.
